Enjoy this video from Aja Naomi King from the break out show "How to Get Away With Murder" as she explains her struggle with Imposter Syndrome
Imposter Syndrome it's a thing…Women are put in a disadvantage when it comes to jobs and internship especially POC. We knew that. But what happens when we are given a seat at the table? What happens when we got are dream tech internship or won that award how do WE view ourselves?
Well let's first talk about what imposter syndrome is. Imposter Syndrome the term was coined by american psychologists, Pauline Clance and Suzanne Imes in 1978. In more layman's terms its described as a sense of intellectual fraudulence which seems to hit many high achievers and especially women in particular. If you're reading this and you saw the word “high achiever” and thought you didn’t fit into that qouta, that your not worthy of being seen with high standard you have imposter syndrome. Point blank. Period. So how does this tie into WIT (Women In Tech) with tech being such a male dominated career many women who think when the score that high paying internship they think that they got that by a fluke or chance. They are wrong you deserve to be their and you worked hard to be their so bath in your glory sis… I am not gonna lie I struggle with imposter syndrome when I received the NCWIT Aspiration in Computing award in early 2018 I was confused. How did a girl from a small suburban school get this? My GPA doesn’t match with those who also won? I wasn’t going to any ivies in the fall I didn’t do any TED talks like some of other NCWIT AIC award winners received. All my past accomplishment went to they wey side. The internship I did my past summer and club I started at my local high school or the time energy I put into Women Student Union at my school seemed to be something I forgot because I only remember the bad parts.
